Back To TopAlone Against the Dealer
Blackjack is not a team game, nor is it a competition with other players. It is contest of each individual against the dealer. Players wager and win or lose, independent of what happens with others.
That said, most Blackjack tables feature from five to seven betting spots. There is seating for just as many players, who come and go at will. The parade of ever-changing tablemates can be quite a challenge for the serious Blackjack player, who may have to endure visits from novices, partiers, loudmouths, drunks, slow players, poor players, know-it-alls, high stakes bettors, penny pinchers, tourists, off-duty casino staff, and all various other forms of distraction.
Playing Heads Up
An attractive alternative is playing alone against the dealer. This can be accomplished either by sitting down at an empty table and asking the pit boss to open it or by outlasting everyone else and ending up as the only player at a previously busy table.
That said, many players admit they are afraid to go “heads up” against a dealer. They fear being out-maneuvered, rushed to make decisions, and taken advantage of by someone whose job it is to play Blackjack for a living. Yet playing alone against the dealer is actually in a player’s best interests, for many good reasons. For example, card counters find that playing Blackjack alone against the dealer makes it much easier to keep track of what’s been played.
First and foremost among the advantage, however, is the opportunity to win more money faster. How much a player can profit in an hour is a function of the number of hands dealt, and fewer players means more deals. Assuming the average hand consists of 2.7 cards, a full table of seven players plus the dealer sees 22 cards per deal. A single player alone with a dealer will see just six cards. That means at least three times as many cards can be seen per hour.
For a good player, most hands do not require a lot of decision-making—it is either hit or stand. If a betting strategy is employed, knowing how much to wager is a quick decision, too, so it is quite possible to play even four or five times faster than a full table.
On the downside, the pace is so fast when playing alone that there is little time for sipping a drink, let alone taking a mental break. Beginners and intermediate players who need time to think may prefer the pace of a full table. Heads up is for those who know their Basic Blackjack Strategy forwards and backwards and can almost play hands on auto-pilot.
More Pros and Cons
It is quite common to get on a roll or hit a bad slump when playing alone with a dealer. When the latter occurs, it is best to slow down the game by taking a break. It is not possible to “sit out” a hand when playing heads up, but the dealer will not act until a bet is placed, so taking a breather without leaving the table is most certainly allowed by delaying putting up a wager.
A bigger challenge is when a winning streak comes along and spectators start to gather. Having an audience can cause a form of “performance anxiety.” Worse still, an eager beaver may sit down at the table and say “I want in on this.” Proper etiquette would be for the new player to ask permission to join the table, which can always be declined, but it is really up to the pit bosses whether others can be seated when you are playing alone. Providing the dealer and pit crew with tips can help make their decision a little easier.
Other ways to discourage game-crashers include sitting in the middle-most seat and playing at a higher stakes table. Simply requesting a private game is not out of order, either.
Another intrinsic advantage of going heads up is the ability to play multiple hands. Some casinos require only that the player make at least a minimum bet on each spot. Others insist that equal amounts be wagered for each hand. And some will allow any number of hands to be played, but require that they be bet continuously. Once off a spot for a hand, the spot may not be regained. Obviously, it is important to be familiar with the House Rules before opening up a table for solo play.

Comments: The racquet has it pros and cons. Pros: First it has excellent control and power. Cons: Lacks in balance though if not hit perfect everytime the racquet punishes you with a skip or a over hit ball.
From: Jordan, FL, USA, 07/11Skill-level: AString type and tension: 34lbs
Comments: I demoed the Black Jack at the Outdoor Nationals this year and last year. My take is that it plays like the IGS 165 but doesn't break easy like the IGS did. Forehand or back hand produced low hard shots consistently. The new Submission racquet seemed to have the same power as the Blackjack, but with less control. In fact, the Submission plays just like the Problem Child, but with slightly more power. Two other open players that I know are staying with the Blackjack this year instead of buying one of the new racquets. From: Barry, Diamond Bar, CA, USA, 07/11Skill-level:EliteString type and tension: Factory.
Comments: I found the Blackjack a great doubles front court racquet because of it's light feel and then I worked with it's light weight to shoot off the glass. The only problem is that the racquet is light, light, light. My swing deteriorated with time. I had to keep a heavier racquet to maintain a clean swing plane. It's just too easy to snap your wrist and take crazy shots. From: Don. 5/11
Comments: I demoed both the Black Jack and the Royal Flush. I bought the BJ because I played better with it. The 170 felt to heavy for me at the time. Then I started weight training again. Now the RF feels as light as the BJ did before and I can't connect at all with the BJ. Constant skips and mis-hits. Check out the strung weights, not the listed weights. The Head 180 actually weighs exactly as much as the E-Force 170. I thought I needed new strings, but even with Biphase 17 I couldn't connect with the BJ. Just demoed the Full House against the RF and I'm going to be buying the FH. Also noticed I don't care for head heavy racquets. The natural weight of the FH at 1pt head heavy felt much more robust and comfortable than the lighter weight/heavy heavy BJ at 5 pts and the RF at 4 pts. You'll notice most companies are going with an even balance or close to it. The Black Jack is way too light. If you demo don't go just by how you play. The strings could be jacked up on the better racquet. I picked the FH by swinging at the air repeatedly as a comparison. I noticed the head heavy racquet were giving me wrist discomfort. If I played a total power game I might go with the BJ or RF, but I don't.
If you do go with the Black Jack you are going to have to swing 100% every time. This is not a touch racquet. If you try to place or touch you will lose with this one. I thought this light racquet would be an endurance racquet for me, because of it's maneuverability and low energy cost to swing at 50% or 75% power, but in fact you tire out faster because you have to try to kill the ball in order to be consistent. I might be able to play 2 games, 3 max with the BJ and I have tons of endurance. I'll still have energy, but if you don't have near 100% you can swing 100%.
If you get new strings you might want to string on the low end (32-34). Stringing at 36 lbs was horrible. The racquet doesn't have enough inertia to make such a tight string bed hit well. There was no feel at all. I like control, but little did I know I was putting control tension on a power racquet.
From: Jonathan, Tampa, FLSkill-level: BString type and tension: Megablast 16 stock and BiPhase 17 @ 36 lbs
Comments: After playing with Ektelon Racquets for 8 years I demoed the 2010 Ektelon Attack and the Head Black Jack. I now own two Head Black Jacks, all you have to do is try one. Unbelievable. From: Frank , Granada Hills, CA, USA, 08/10 Skill-level:A String type and tension: Ashaway Killfire 17ga. 32lbs.
Comments: I have tried every major racquet in the last five years and until I tried the Head Black Jack, I was using the Ektelon EX03 Black. I will demo the 2010 Ektelon Attack but will be surprised if it can beat out the Black Jack for a light stick with the super power and unbelievable CONTROL. Just demo this racquet, until this year I was not a big fan of Head Racquets but the Black Jack is awesome. From: AlexCity, State, Country:Palos Verdes, CA 06/10Skill-level: AString type and tension: Tecnifibre HPR 18ga @ 34lbs.

Nobody Wants to Play at an Empty Blackjack Table
13 March 2005 By Fred RenzeyYou see it all the time as you walk down the casino aisle -- rows and rows of crowded blackjack tables and then an empty one with the dealer standing there all by himself. People scurry to squeeze into crowded seats, but nobody wants to be that first player to sit down at the empty table. Why is this, anyway?
Do players feel outgunned if they're going heads up alone with the dealer? Is there more safety in numbers? Which way do you have a better chance to win? Let's look at the facts concerning these sensitive questions.
Fact #1: Percentagewise, the average player has exactly the same chance to win a given hand whether he's playing alone or at a seven-handed table.
Fact #2: A player has exactly the same chance to be dealt good hands regardless of what seat he's sitting in. Any concepts about certain seats taking the good cards or the decisive cards out of the shoe are sadly misunderstood.
From those two standpoints, the odds of the game do not change. A typical ham-n-egger will on average, fall one additional bet behind for every 65 hands he plays -- no matter how many gamblers are at his table and no matter where he sits. If he happens to be a skilled basic strategy player, he'll slip only one hand behind for every 200 hands played, on average. It depends not upon the crowd size or his seat number, but upon his skill alone along with Lady Luck in the short term.
There's more to that than what meets the immediate eye, however. You see, the speed of a blackjack game is directly dependent upon the number of players at the table. In a seven-handed game, each player will get in about 55 hands per hour. Playing alone with the dealer, you'll see about 230 hands in that same hour.
Although the percentages are identical both ways, you'll end up losing your money about four times as fast playing heads up (alone with the dealer) as you will at a jammed up table. So if you want to get some playing time for your money, there is indeed safety in numbers, but not for the reason that you probably thought.
Since your food comps and cash comps are based upon your average bet size and your hours played, rather than number of hands played, you get more value by playing s-l-o-w-l-y. Yet, there's still one more caveat to this tricky question.
All the above is absolutely true, assuming you're a losing player which 99% of the blackjack players are. But what if you're a winning player? I mean, suppose you're an honest-to-goodness winner at the overall game? Then -- everything is reversed!
That's because winners don't gradually fall behind in the game. They gradually pull ahead! Winners don't want to play slowly to make their chips last longer. They want to play quickly to make their chips grow in as short a time as possible.
A top-notch winning blackjack player can pull one extra bet ahead for every 125 hands he plays, on average. That can take him two hours at a crowded table or a half hour going heads up with the dealer. That's why blackjack pros like to play alone. It has nothing to do with bad players at 3rd base or any of that other voodoo nonsense.
So what kind of player is a winning player? I can tell you this. It has nothing to do with betting progressions, hitting and running, having a good player at 3rd base, hot tables or no mid-shoe entry signs.
It all has to do with used card awareness. You have to have some knowledge of what's been played and what's left -- and I don't mean a rough idea off the top of your head. You need some hard information that you can bet on. That'll take some extra effort and learning on your part but, I'm sorry, there's just no other way over the top.
If you're not ready to take your game to that level, then keep on playing at crowded tables and take your comps. There's nothing wrong with that either.

Sometimes players act out of turn intentionally to get a read out of other players. Another word for poker stake. ZA ace in the hole One of the is an ace ace-to-five, ace-to-six Methods of evaluating low hands. Act To make a play (check, bet, call, raise, or fold) at the required time, compare to. Acting out of turn A player in poker that either announces their actions or physically plays before their turn ( checks, folds etc ). Y.
